Enjoy easy curbside glass recycling at your home!

Recycle Glass

Tired of tossing glass in the trash when you know it could be recycled? Momentum Recycling offers convenient curbside glass recycling in Lehi City so your bottles and jars actually get recycled instead of landfilled.

Benefits of Glass Recycling

Recycling glass through our program offers numerous advantages:

100% Recyclable

100% recyclable

Glass can be recycled endlessly with no loss in quality. About 80% of recovered glass containers become new glass bottles.

Energy Conservation

Energy conservation

Making products from recycled glass consumes 40% less energy than using raw materials. This is because cullet melts at a much lower temperature.

Job Creation

Step 3 Sorting Stations

Glass recycling creates 8-10 jobs compared to just 1 job if the glass is sent to a landfill. This boosts our local economy.

Conservation of Resources

For every ton of glass recycled, over a ton of natural resources are conserved, including 1,300 pounds of sand, 410 pounds of soda ash, 380 pounds of limestone, and 160 pounds of feldspar.

Reduced CO2 Emissions

Reduced CO2

For every six tons of recycled container glass used, a ton of carbon dioxide emissions is prevented.

Extended Landfill Life

Extended Landfill Life

By diverting glass from landfills, we extend their useful life and help keep waste disposal costs lower for everyone.

What Is Residential Curbside Glass Recycling In Lehi City?

Residential curbside glass recycling lets Lehi residents recycle glass bottles and jars right from home. Momentum Recycling provides a dedicated glass bin, picks it up monthly, and processes the glass locally so it can be turned into new products instead of going to the landfill. Together with other Utah communities, we’re keeping valuable glass out of the trash and supporting the local economy.

Separate Collection

Glass is collected in a dedicated container to prevent mixing with other materials. This prevents contamination and ensures collected glass is successfully recycled.

Convenient Monthly Pickup

Our service provides once-a-month collection from your home. You’ll receive reminders via email or text before your scheduled pickup day. Find your collection day using our interactive map or PDF route guide.

No Sorting Required

All colors of glass bottles and jars are accepted together. No need to separate by color – we handle that at our processing facility.

Our Glass Recycling Process

Momentum Recycling uses a sophisticated process to turn your glass into valuable materials:

After collecting your glass and dropping it off at our facility, common glass contaminants (like ceramics, mirrors, etc.) are sorted out.

The recycled glass goes through several steps including multiple stages of sorting (by size and color), baking (to remove food remains and labels), and pulverization.

Et Voilà! Your glass is ready for it’s next life as glass bottles, fiberglass insulation, or a number of other glass products.

Step 4 Glass Breaking

Need To Know Recycling Questions & Answers

Q: Do I Need to Rinse or Remove Labels From Glass?

Empty jam/jelly jar

A: Don’t worry about washing food remains or removing labels. Our process gets rid of it all. You may remove lids and corks, if convenient (these can go in your regular recycling bin) or keep them on the containers and our sorting process will remove them.

Q: Why Can’t We Put Glass in Our Blue Curbside Can?

Empty glass jars with lids

A: Glass requires special handling for several important reasons:

  • The local Material Recycling Facility cannot effectively separate and process glass mixed with other recyclables.
  • Glass breaks easily and creates sharp fragments that pose safety risks to handlers.
  • When glass breaks in mixed recycling, tiny shards contaminate other recyclables and reduce their value.
  • Source-separated glass collection ensures more glass is actually recycled rather than ending up in landfills.

Q: Can Broken Glass Be Recycled?

Broken glass

A: Yes! Broken glass is perfectly acceptable for recycling. In fact, breaking glass is part of our recycling process. Just make sure all glass pieces are safely contained inside your recycling bin.

Other Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

A: Absolutely! Broken glass is perfectly acceptable. In fact, our glass recycling facility breaks glass down into pieces so small it looks and feels like sand (called cullet).

A: No. Although it may be beneficial for your work space to avoid the smells that sometimes accompany food-related waste, it is not necessary to spend time washing your recyclables. By not washing empty recyclable containers, we can all preserve one of the most precious natural resources: water.

A: Most glass at your organization is recyclable; however, there are some materials that we cannot accept. Here are the materials that are NOT acceptable:

  • Automotive Glass (i.e. windshields)
  • Ceramics (i.e. plates & dishes)
  • Light Bulbs
  • Mirrors
  • Porcelain (i.e. plates & dishes)
  • Pyrex (i.e. heat resistant cookware)

A: Our local Material Recycling Facility (MRF) is unable to source-separate and process glass at their facility. Glass is very difficult to remove once the small shards find their way into the mixed recyclables (think needles in a haystack such as glass shards embedded in cardboard) – which then devalues the recycled commodities later when resold into the market. Glass also breaks fairly easily, and tends to then become very sharp, posing a significant risk to the person that handles and/or sorts the material. Lastly, when source-separated, more glass is captured in the process and able to be recycled.

A: We bring the glass back to our Salt Lake City glass recycling facility where it is processed into cullet, after which it is used for things like fiberglass insulation, sandblasting, asphalt strengthening, and glass products (learn more about the process).

A: Momentum Recycling uses a sophisticated process to turn your glass into valuable materials:

  1. Collection and Initial Sorting: Glass from curbside bins is collected and brought to our facility. The first sorting stations remove contaminants like ceramics, light bulbs, and mirrors.
  2. Breaking and Screening: Glass enters a crusher with 24 large hammers that break it into manageable pieces. A revolving trammel screen then separates the glass from contaminants and sorts it into different sizes.
  3. Cleaning and Drying: The glass passes through a fluidized bed dryer heated to 190 degrees Fahrenheit. This process burns off residue, loosens label glue, and removes paper labels.
  4. Metal Removal and Color Sorting: Powerful magnets extract ferrous metals for separate recycling. An advanced optical sorter then separates different colors of glass using lasers and air jets.
  5. Size Reduction and Classification: The final product, called cullet, resembles sand or fine particles. The glass is pulverized into fine particles and classified into specific size grades.

A: You bet! Momentum Recycling provides different cart sizes and collection frequencies for businesses of all sizes. Click here to learn more.

A: place your bin at the curb by 7 a.m. on your pickup day, at least 3 ft away from cars, fences, and other property.
