Momentum Recycling uses a sophisticated process to turn your glass into valuable materials:

After collecting your glass and dropping it off at our facility, common glass contaminants (like ceramics, mirrors, etc.) are sorted out.

The recycled glass goes through several steps including multiple stages of sorting (by size and color), baking (to remove food remains and labels), and pulverization.

Et Voilà! Your glass is ready for it’s next life as glass bottles, fiberglass insulation, or a number of other glass products.

Q: Do I Need to Rinse or Remove Labels From Glass?

A: No need! Preparing your glass for recycling is easy:

  • Empty all containers completely.
  • Labels and lids do not need to be removed – our process handles this.
  • Rinsing is not required, though it may help prevent odors in your home.

By not washing containers, you help conserve water – another valuable resource!

Q: Why Can’t We Put Glass in Our Blue Curbside Can?

A: Glass requires special handling for several important reasons:

  • The local Material Recycling Facility cannot effectively separate and process glass mixed with other recyclables.
  • Broken glass shards can pose safety risks to handlers and contaminate other recyclables, reducing their value.
  • A separate glass collection ensures more glass is actually recycled rather than ending up in landfills.

A: Yes! Broken glass is perfectly acceptable for recycling. In fact, breaking glass is part of our recycling process. Just make sure all glass pieces are safely contained inside your recycling bin.

A: Absolutely! Broken glass is perfectly acceptable. In fact, our glass recycling facility breaks glass down into pieces so small it looks and feels like sand (called cullet).

A: No. Although it may be beneficial for your work space to avoid the smells that sometimes accompany food-related waste, it is not necessary to spend time washing your recyclables. By not washing empty recyclable containers, we can all preserve one of the most precious natural resources: water.

A: Most glass at your organization is recyclable; however, there are some materials that we cannot accept. Here are the materials that are NOT acceptable:

  • Automotive Glass (i.e. windshields)
  • Ceramics (i.e. plates & dishes)
  • Light Bulbs
  • Mirrors
  • Porcelain (i.e. plates & dishes)
  • Pyrex

A: Our local Material Recycling Facility (MRF) is unable to source-separate and process glass at their facility. Glass is very difficult to remove once the small shards find their way into the mixed recyclables (think needles in a haystack such as glass shards embedded in cardboard) – which then devalues the recycled commodities later when resold into the market. Glass also breaks fairly easily, and tends to then become very sharp, posing a significant risk to the person that handles and/or sorts the material. Lastly, when source-separated, more glass is captured in the process and able to be recycled.

A: We bring the glass back to our Salt Lake City glass recycling facility where it is processed into cullet, after which it is used for things like fiberglass insulation, sandblasting, asphalt strengthening, and glass products (learn more about the process).

A: When you signup, you provide your credit card payment information that will then be charged the service fee each month. Since we are unable to accept any other payment method (i.e. check. PayPal, etc.), only credit card payments are currently accepted. You can view the date of your next recurring payment by logging in to your account.

A: Yes – you can add a 2nd bin for an additional fee/month and a one-time 25.00 activation fee. To add a bin to your account, please contact us.

A: Yes, you can put your account on a temporary hold up to four (4) months. Once you restart service, you will be charged a one-time twenty-five dollar ($25.00) reactivation fee. Please contact us to put your account on a temporary hold.

A: To cancel your service, login to your account and click on My Services in the menu on the left. You will see a blue “Cancel” button to cancel your service. We will then contact you via email about when to place your bin on the curb for removal.

A: Momentum Recycling uses a sophisticated process to turn your glass into valuable materials:

  1. Collection and Initial Sorting: Glass from curbside bins is collected and brought to our facility. The first sorting stations remove contaminants like ceramics, light bulbs, and mirrors.
  2. Breaking and Screening: Glass enters a crusher with 24 large hammers that break it into manageable pieces. A revolving trammel screen then separates the glass from contaminants and sorts it into different sizes.
  3. Cleaning and Drying: The glass passes through a fluidized bed dryer heated to 190 degrees Fahrenheit. This process burns off residue, loosens label glue, and removes paper labels.
  4. Metal Removal and Color Sorting: Powerful magnets extract ferrous metals for separate recycling. An advanced optical sorter then separates different colors of glass using lasers and air jets.
  5. Size Reduction and Classification: The final product, called cullet, resembles sand or fine particles. The glass is pulverized into fine particles and classified into specific size grades.
