In our mission to help move the community towards zero waste, Momentum Recycling is conducting a 3-month free pilot program for residential food waste collection to select Millcreek residents who sign up before July 1st.
The program will run from July 1st – September 28th and is available to a limited number of households – so hurry, spots fill up quickly!
Program Overview
Made Possible By:
Thanks to the support of Intermountain Healthcare, their generous donation is helping advance residential food waste recycling to preserve the beauty of the Wasatch Front.
Thanks to the success of a similar program in Salt Lake City this winter, the Wasatch Front Waste & Recycling District is now piloting the service in Millcreek.
Wasatch Resource Recovery in North Salt Lake
Turn your food waste into energy.
Using specially designed trucks, we transport your food waste to the Wasatch Resource Recovery facility in North Salt Lake to be processed.
Biogas is captured in an anaerobic digester & purified before it is converted into renewable natural gas and fed into the municipal gas pipeline, which then will supply a sustainable energy source for approximately 15,000 households! – The remaining byproduct is a nutrient-rich, carbon-based fertilizer used by local farms to grow crops.
Salt Lake County Landfill
Won’t it decompose in the landfill?
– Nope.
Food does not break down in a landfill because it lacks the oxygen + water necessary for decomposition. A single head of lettuce can take up to 25-years to decompose in a landfill! When it does, it emits methane, a greenhouse gas 23% stronger than carbon dioxide. Food waste at the landfill also emits ammonia, which has proven to be a major contributor to Salt Lake City’s winter inversions.
What food waste is accepted?
Our scrape-the-plate service allows you to simply empty all food waste into one bin: no messy sorting required! All types of food waste are accepted, including packaged & prepared food, fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, and fats, oils & grease.

How do I pay for services?
Answer: The pilot program is FREE for 3-months. You will receive an email 2-weeks prior to the end of the pilot program for you to tell us whether you wish to continue with the service or cancel. If you choose to continue with the service, it will be added to your Wasatch Front Waste & Recycling District utility bill.
Is there a contract? - Can I cancel later?
Answer: No contract – the service is month-to-month, so you can cancel any time by contacting us.
Can I use my own bucket?
Answer: No – to maintain consistency and to avoid confusion, you will need to use the 4-gallon bucket provided.
How do I increase from a bucket to a cart?
Answer: During the course of the pilot program, we ask that you keep the bin that you selected. However, if it is particularly problematic, please contact us to swap it out for the larger 16-gallon purple cart.
