Turn Your Food Waste Into Energy

Food Waste Recycling:

How Does It Work?

Place your food waste in the designated container provided
to you by Momentum Recycling (multiple size options, for home and business).

Downward Arrow

Using specially designed trucks, we transport your food waste to
the Wasatch Resource Recovery facility in North Salt Lake to be processed.

Downward Arrow

Biogas is captured & purified before it is converted into renewable natural gas
and fed into the municipal gas pipeline, which then will
supply gas for approximately 40,000 people!

The remaining byproduct is a nutrient-rich, carbon-based fertilizer
used to help local farms grow crops.

Why Should You Give A Scrap?

Employees Love It

Our scrape-the-plate service allows for staff to simply empty all food waste into one bin: no messy sorting required! All types of food waste are accepted, including packaged & unpackaged food, prepared food, fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, and fats, oils & grease. In addition, some contamination is acceptable – such as when a napkin, straw, or ketchup packet is left on the plate. However, it’s important to note that compostable packaging and containers are not accepted, as they are designed for traditional industrial composting, not anaerobic digestion, and thus will not break down properly.

Reduce Spending on Trash Hauling

Reduce the weight & frequency of your trash hauling service by removing food waste from your dumpster. Your trash hauler is charging you a service fee plus a tipping fee of anywhere from $26-31/ton, whereas we offer a simple flat-rate service.

Attract New Customers

80% of consumers are willing to buy a product from an unknown brand if it has strong social responsibility commitments. Stand out from the crowd as a local sustainable business!

But, won’t it just decompose in the landfill if I don’t recycle it?

Yes, eventually. While food does break down in a landfill, it takes an extremely long time due to the lack of oxygen and water necessary for decomposition. (A single head of lettuce can take up to 25 years to decompose in a landfill!) When it does, it emits methane, a greenhouse gas 23% stronger than carbon dioxide. Rather than being released into the atmosphere, these gases, including carbon dioxide and ammonia, are captured, converted, and used as a renewable energy resource. However, landfills, by design, are not intended to be efficient renewable energy generation systems. Additionally, space at landfills is a precious resource – and any food waste that is diverted saves space and extends the landfill’s lifespan. Simply put, diverting food waste to an anaerobic digester is the most efficient and effective way of generating renewable energy from food waste.

Frequently Asked Questions

About the Process:

Answer:  Good question! For one, food waste makes up nearly 30% of our landfills and contributes to climate change when it breaks down in the landfill and is converted to methane gas. Food waste can be composted and turned into a soil conditioner or fertilizer for agriculture. In the next year, we will be diverting food waste to an anaerobic digester where it will be converted into natural gas that can provide power for 40,000 people. Learn more about turning organics into energy.

Answer:  We understand that what can and can’t be composted can be confusing, which is why we provide helpful signage in our Resource Center for you to reference. Here is a list of the main materials that are not accepted in green waste containers:

  • Cardboard
  • Oil  (i.e. cooking oils)
  • Rubber/Latex Gloves
  • Wood Lumber + Sawdust

Answer:  We transport all food waste to the Wasatch Resource Recovery facility in North Salt Lake to be processed.

Answer: Unfortunately, No.

  • Salt Lake City Area:  Unfortunately, compostable products are meant specifically for industrial compost facilities, and not for anaerobic digesters. Because the two processes differ in some crucial ways, these compostables will not break down properly and will most likely be screened out before they ever hit the digester. Wasatch Resource Recovery does allow for some contamination, and all food waste goes through a depackaging machine. However, best practices are to leave the compostable packaging and containers out of your food waste bin.

About the Service:

Answer:  Nope! – we provide these reports to every customer so that they can monitor their progress and share their diversion stats with colleagues and customers.

Answer:  Our Logistics Team works hard to ensure that we are operating our routes in the most efficient manner and with the fewest emissions possible. We route stops according to their geographical location primarily, but if there are days and times when your containers can’t be made accessible, we will do our best to accommodate your needs – no problem.

Answer:  Yes! – If it is more convenient for your daily operations to have us come inside and pull the bins out to be serviced, we do offer internal service for just $5.50/bin per pickup.

Monthly fees greater than $100 may be paid via credit card or check. (We ask that you please notify us of any billing concerns or disputes prior to the last day of the month in question.)
