Glass recycling requires about 8-10 workers, compared to 1 worker if the glass is landfilled. Creating these local jobs helps boost the local economy.
Recycling Saves Energy
Making recycled glass products from cullet consumes 40 percent less energy than making new glass from raw materials, because cullet melts at a much lower temperature.
Recycling Cuts Waste Disposal Costs
In terms of weight, glass makes up about 5% of the waste stream. Recycling glass means savings on waste collection and disposal costs, which are increasing due to landfill disposal costs.
Recycling Saves Raw Materials
Over a ton of natural resources are conserved for every ton of glass recycled, including 1,300 pounds of sand, 410 pounds of soda ash, 380 pounds of limestone, and 160 pounds of feldspar.
Recycling Reduces CO2 Emissions
For every six tons of recycled container glass used, a ton of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, is reduced.
Recycling Extends Landfill Life, Keeping Sanitation Costs Low
Since 2004, there has been a steady increase in landfill tipping fees (source: EPA), which is a charge levied upon the weight of waste received at a waste processing facility (landfill). By diverting recyclables from the landfill, these fees can be avoided and the capacity of the landfill is extended by not filling it with recyclable materials.
