Curbside Glass Recycling Spreading to SL County Neighborhoods

Big News! – We are excited to announce that the curbside glass recycling program is expanding into Salt Lake County neighborhoods!  In partnership with Wasatch Front Waste & Recycling, the new program has already begun servicing the Canyon Rim and Emigration Canyon neighborhoods.  You can sign-up to get your own bin here on Wasatch Front’s website for just $8/mo and a $45 startup fee.

Jason Utgaard works here at Momentum Recycling assisting with our community outreach efforts by helping educate area residents on how/where to best recycle their glass, as well as by helping to promote the efforts of local businesses who are actively recycling to divert material from our landfills.

A few years ago, Jason founded an online store called The Spotted Door that is dedicated exclusively to products made from recycled + reclaimed materials.  The site features reclaimed wood furniture, recycled glass jewelry, clothing made from recycled plastic, and several hundred other items.

He recently presented at TEDxSaltLakeCity on “Designing the Future Using Unlikely Materials.”  Take a few minutes and listen to his inspirational talk!

 

Recycle Utah Gets “Uncorked” with Annual Fundraiser

Recycle Utah wants to offer continuous glass recycling for Summit County. The nonprofit organization has recycled glass on and off for the past 24 ½ years, and would like to make it a permanent service. The trick, however, is the logistics: “We would do it when we had someone to deliver our bin to the Salt Lake valley,” said Insa Riepen, Recycle Utah executive director. “We would collect the glass here and then transport it down the canyon, but we couldn’t guarantee that we could do it because we needed to contract the haulers and the sorters.” That’s why Recycle Utah began hosting its Uncorked fundraiser three years ago.  Read More

Pleasant Grove Glass Recycling Program Gets a Second Pass

A simple tweet opened a whole new possibility for recycling in Utah Valley this week. Acting on the request of residents, Pleasant Grove has started what is believed to be the valley’s first glass recycling program. Utah Valley as a whole has been slow to adopt such an effort, which has been available for a couple years in Salt Lake County and Park City.

West Valley City to Open Glass Recycling Drop-Off Location

West Valley City has partnered with Waste Management of Utah and Momentum Recycling to provide a drop-off location for glass. The drop-off bin is located at the West Valley City Public Works building at 2805 South 3600 West and is accessible seven days a week.

The city’s new Public Safety Building is the first building of its kind in the country to earn a “net zero” energy rating, meaning it generates as much energy as it uses.

Open for just a few months and home to the city’s police and fire departments as well as emergency dispatchers, the 174,000-square-foot building features a roof canopy of solar panels, an off-site solar farm and takes advantage of natural lighting with abundant and strategically placed windows.
