Why Recycle Electronics?

Batteries and mercury containing lamps (bulbs) are considered Universal Waste due to the levels of mercury & lead they contain. Mercury & lead are toxic metals that can accumulate in living tissue and cause adverse health effects. When a lamp (bulb) is broken, placed in a landfill or incinerated, metals are released into the environment that may contaminate air, land, or water. The Environmental Protection Agency’s Universal Waste Rule (link) was designed to encourage the collection and recycling of certain hazardous wastes that are generated by a wide variety of businesses and institutions. Solid waste landfills in Salt Lake County, Davis County and Summit County will not knowingly take hazardous waste from businesses or households (as is common practice for landfills nationwide).

About Our Special Collection Service

Momentum Recycling offers commercial entities in the Salt Lake City area a convenient collection service for responsibly recycling batteries, light bulbs + electronics. The service is offered as a call-to-haul collection (regular pickups available upon request), with pickups occurring at minimum on a quarterly basis.

Acceptable Items + Material Handling

We accept multiple types of batteries + light bulbs as detailed below. Participants simply need to follow the material handling guidelines below to prepare for us to collect your materials.

Light Bulb Recycling Light Bulb Recycling

Light Bulbs Accepted:

  • Cold Cathode
  • Fluorescent (bulbs, tubes, circular, U bend)
  • Halogen
  • High Pressure Sodium
  • Incandescent
  • Mercury Vapor
  • Metal Halide
  • Spot/Flood Lamps
  • UV and Germicidal

We cannot dispose of broken bulbs. If bulbs/tubes are broken, please contact the Small Business Hazardous Waste Hotline at (801) 541-4078. Do not place broken bulbs in the collection containers.

Material Handling:

  • Separate small and large bulbs.
  • Place in a box (or bucket) labeled “BULBS.”
  • Write the # of bulbs contained within on each box.

Light Bulb Recycling Battery Recycling

Batteries Accepted:

  • Dry Cell (AA, AAA, C, D, 6V, 9V)
  • Lead Acid (Pb)
  • Nickel Cadmium (NiCd)
  • Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH)
  • Lithium Ion (Li-ion) & Lithium Polymer (Li-poly)

We cannot accept leaking batteries. If batteries are leaking or compromised in any way, please contact the Small Business Hazardous Waste Hotline at (801) 541-4078.

Material Handling:

  • Separate batteries by type.
  • You must tape the terminal ends on ALL batteries except for non-rechargeable alkaline batteries (9V batteries do need to be taped).
  • Place them in a box (or bucket) labeled “BATTERIES.”
