How Does It Work?
Using Momentum Recycling, your organization can divert food waste from
the landfill to a facility that converts it into natural gas –
a sustainable energy source for local homes!
Place your food waste in the designated container provided
to you by Momentum Recycling (multiple size options).
Using specially designed trucks, we transport your food waste to
the Wasatch Resource Recovery facility in North Salt Lake to be processed.
Biogas is captured & purified before it is converted into renewable natural gas
and fed into the municipal gas pipeline, which then will
supply gas for approximately 40,000 people!
The remaining byproduct is a nutrient-rich, carbon-based fertilizer
used to help local farms grow crops.

Our scrape-the-plate service allows for staff to simply empty all food waste into one bin: no messy sorting required! All types of food waste are accepted, including prepared food, fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, and fats, oils & grease. In addition, compostable products are acceptable – such as takeout containers, napkins, utensils and other tableware.
Won’t it decompose in the landfill? – Nope.
Nothing breaks down in a landfill because it lacks oxygen + water that aid in decomposition. A single head of lettuce can take up to 25-years to decompose in a landfill! When it does, it off-gases methane, a greenhouse gas 23 times stronger than the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. Food waste at the landfill also emits ammonia, which has been proven to be a major contributor to winter inversions.

About the Process:
Why recycle food waste?
Answer: Good question! For one, food waste makes up nearly 30% of our landfills and contributes to climate change when it breaks down in the landfill and is converted to methane gas. Food waste can be composted and turned into a soil conditioner or fertilizer for agriculture.
What types of materials are NOT accepted in the food waste bin?
Answer: We understand that what can and can’t be composted can be confusing, which is why we provide helpful signage in our Resource Center for you to reference. Here is a list of the main materials that are not accepted in food waste containers:
- Packaging
- Oil (i.e. cooking oils)
- Rubber/Latex Gloves
- Wood Lumber + Sawdust

Where does the food waste go?
Answer: We transport all food waste to the Wasatch Resource Recovery facility in North Salt Lake to be processed.
Are compostable containers accepted?
Answer: YES – compostable products are meant specifically for industrial compost facilities.
About the Service:
Can I modify my service later if I need to? (bin quantity + pickup frequency)
Answer: Of course! Just reach out to us and we will adjust your service level right away. There are no fees involved.
Does the Diversion Reporting & Monitoring cost extra?
Answer: Nope! – we provide these reports to every customer so that they can monitor their progress and share their diversion stats with colleagues and customers.
Can you service my location within a set time window?
Answer: Our Logistics Team works hard to ensure that we are operating our routes in the most efficient manner and with the fewest emissions possible. We route stops according to their geographical location primarily, but if there are days and times when your containers can’t be made accessible, we will do our best to accommodate your needs – no problem.
Do you offer internal service?
Answer: Yes! – If it is more convenient for your daily operations to have us come inside and pull the bins out to be serviced, we do offer internal service for just $5.50/bin per pickup.
How do I pay for services? When am I invoiced?
Answer: Service fees are due prior to the 1st day of each month for the services scheduled in the upcoming month. Monthly fees of $100-or-less are required to be paid via credit card. Monthly fees greater than $100 may be paid via credit card or check. (We ask that you please notify us of any billing concerns or disputes prior to the last day of the month in question.)
